A Salvadoran Christmas Treat: Mazapán

Mazapán is a confection that is typical to the area of San Vicente in El Salvador. It starts with milk and sugar.

Then they add ground pumpkin seed and stir and stir until it becomes thick.  

After that they spread it out to dry and then cut into little squares.

 This lady is the owner of the candy shop and she was rolling the Mazapán in the cinnamon and placing  the raison on top.  She explained to us how it was made and said we could go in the back to see it being done.

This is the little store front that sold all kinds of yummy Salvadoran treats.


This is what the finished product looks like.  It is kind of like eating spiced dough.  It is really good and in years to come might be more common to me during Christmas time than chocolate chip cookies.  You can get the recipe here: http://www.elsalvador.travel/dulce-de-mazapan/
